Line-Rate Packet Processing on Orbit using eBPF and XDP

Technical analysis and engineering reference.

1. Spaceborne Compute Constraints vs. Terabit Throughputs

Radiation-tolerant spaceflight processors operate at modest clock speeds (typically 1.0 to 1.5 GHz) to manage power dissipation and minimize Single Event Effects (SEE). Traditional Linux kernel networking, which copies packets across memory buffers and interrupts the CPU for every packet, collapses when trying to handle 40 to 100 Gbps optical transceiver links.

2. Kernel-Bypass Architecture via eXpress Data Path (XDP)

XDP executes verified C bytecode directly within the network interface card driver space before the packet enters the operating system networking stack: - Packet parsing and destination lookups executed in sub-microsecond cycles. - GTP-U tunnel encap/decap performed in-place within the raw frame memory buffer. - Non-matching packets forwarded instantly to physical optical transceivers without touching CPU memory caches.

3. In-Flight Safe Hot-Reloading

Because eBPF code is mathematically verified for memory safety and termination by the kernel verifier before execution, satellite operators can upload new firewall filtering rules, cryptographic headers, and telemetry collectors without taking down active telecom payloads.
